The three main considerations when buying a shredder are the types of materials you will be shredding, the volume of shredding the machine will be handling, and the security level you need to ensure your privacy
So should you choose a Strip or Cross cut Shredder?
For every-day security use, a straight cut machine which cuts paper into strips may suit. However, for complete peace of mind and a higher level of security, a cross cut model is recommended as it cuts the paper into tiny unreadable pieces!
There are currently six security levels to choose from, level 1 is the lowest and least secure offering a wide strip cut, to the highest level 6 as specified by the US Government for ultra secure shredding for the most sensitive of documents

Printers
Inkjet & Bubble Jet Printers are increasingly popular due to improvements in print quality and colour facility inkjet machines are now extremely well priced. Multi cartridge machines are more economic to run as individual colours can be changed when empty. Bear in mind the wide variance in print speeds of different models and for best print results use a premium paper
Laser Printers are generally designed for heavier duty usage, laser printers are categorised by print speed and memory capacity. They work in the same way as a photocopier in that the consumable is a toner/drum and are therefore more economical to run. Colour lasers printers are also proving popular due to improvements in size, speed, print quality and cost.
Dot Matrix Printers these days tend to be for specialist systems & applications, often only purchased for use with multi-part stationery where the impact of the dot matrix pins on the paper creates a second or third copy, such as with invoices, delivery notes etc.
Dye Sublimation (Photo) Printers are driven by the digital camera market Dye-sublimation printers are becoming more popular and allow you to print photo-lab-quality pictures at home. This technology uses dyes corresponding to the four basic colours used in professional printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It produces a smooth (no dots!) photo quality image, and is also less vulnerable to fading and distortion over time
